Optimal Performance in Business

Your mental state holds the key to your success. We now know that the elite athlete is well aware, that in order to achieve superior performance, they must continuously train their minds for success.

So why don't business people do the same?

When I am working with a sports client, they always have a big picture, something that they are working towards and something that we can then set goals around in order to achieve this Sporting dream. The same can be said for a lot of Business Professionals and Employees in any occupation, concerned with optimal performance.

MENTAL PERFORMANCE IN BUSINESS

If you own or run a business where you are reliant on key members of staff to be able to perform to their optimal best, then just like the sports athlete, you will understand that their mental state of wellbeing and there ability to set goals & targets and achieve them are vital to the success of your business. In order for the elite athlete to be able to play in the zone, they have to learn to examine what it is, that is taking them out of the zone. The same can be said for your key members of staff. In order for them to be able to make sure their team or your employees work to the best of their ability, they need to be in the zone so everyone has an opportunity to reach their full potential.

So just like the elite athlete, we need to examine, what is taking them out or distracting them from optimal performance. There can be a number of reasons why they are not reaching there full potential, the following is but a short few:

  • Stress- possibly over their inability to fully motivate the team
  • Anxiety- Usually caused by looming deadlines with no clear process goals to guide them to success
  • Fear of Failure- this can constantly distract them from being present in the moment which can wreak havoc on everyone's performance.
  • Anger & Frustration- over their teams performance and their own
With out a doubt, there can be any number of reasons why your key staff and their team of employees aren't reaching their full potential consistently. It can often be the case, that they are finding it difficult to deal with staff issues of their own and struggle to get the most out of their team. It is estimated now that more than 50% of all GP visits are Stress & Anxiety related. Therefore, if you truly want to have a consistently successful business, reaching its full potential, you need to recognise the importance of your staff's mental wellbeing. Often your key staff members will recognise that there are members of their team, that are not reaching their full potential but won't necessarily be equipped with the skills to recognise how best to improve that employees performance.

Absenteeism is costing small business's around Ireland 490million euro a year according to the Small Firms Association Absenteeism Report for 2014. It found that 4,052,222 days were lost in 2014 and that Back Pain, Anxiety, Depression and Stress were the biggest contributors. Geographically Absence is highest in the West at 3.38%. It also looked for the most commonly cited reason for absence on medical certs.
